Why we started RankmyAI

In January 2023, I was blown away by the rapid rise of ChatGPT and other generative AI tools. GenAI took the world by surprise and became popular in no time. Over the last ten years, the number of AI tools has skyrocketed, making it increasingly difficult to keep track of the fast-evolving landscape. At the Centre for Market Insights (CMI) of the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (AUAS), we have extensive expertise in market research, data analysis, web scraping, and AI. So I thought—why not develop a platform that ranks AI tools on a monthly basis?

To get started, we reached out to David, who was doing our Master's program Digital Driven Business at AUAS, and asked if he wanted to help us build the database. In 2023, he finished his thesis and officially joined the team, alongside Wilco (co-founder), Frederik, and Jurian. Together, we set out to create RankmyAI, a platform that offers structured, data-driven insights into the ever-changing AI landscape.

Now, two years later, our first version is here. Building the database and developing the platform took us quite some time, but we are proud to finally share it with the world. 

Our Goals

With RankmyAI, we want to achieve five key things:

1. Helping people navigate the AI landscape
   The AI ecosystem is evolving at rapid speed. Tools that are popular today might disappear tomorrow. Through rankings, research, and analysis, we aim to provide users with a clear overview of what’s happening in AI—not only at the tool level, but also at the country, industry, and job role level.
2. Countering hype and misinformation
   The world is full of self-proclaimed "AI experts" on social media, and many AI tool directories and influencers promote tools based on paid advertising rather than actual performance. We take a different approach—our rankings are based on objective data, such as traffic, user reviews, and investment trends. We are fully transparent about our objectives, funding, and methodology.
3. Showing that AI has a tool for every use case
   From image generation to mental health support, from fraud detection to lice counting on fish—AI tools exist for virtually every purpose. With RankmyAI, we want to help users find the right AI tool for their specific needs. You can even vote for use case-specific rankings or suggest new categories here.
4. Highlighting that AI is more than just generative AI
   While GenAI is grabbing the headlines, many other AI technologies—such as NLP, computer vision, and predictive modeling—are just as impactful. RankmyAI provides insights into the full AI spectrum, beyond just generative AI.
5. Providing valuable data for research and education
   Our platform isn’t just for AI enthusiasts—it’s also a valuable resource for students, researchers, and business partners who want to conduct in-depth analyses of AI trends.

The first version of RankmyAI is now live, and we hope it provides valuable insights to you. We are continuously improving and expanding the platform, and we’d love to hear your feedback.

There are several ways you can contribute:

• Suggest new ranking categories if you feel certain AI tools or use cases deserve more attention. See our roadmap.
• Request adjustments to tool information using the feedback form on each tool page if you notice outdated or incorrect details.
• Add new AI tools to our database via the Add tools option (free of charge) to help make the rankings as comprehensive as possible.
• Subscribe to our newsletter and like our LinkedIn page to stay updated about our latest insights and activities.

We also encourage you to use the data and insights from our platform for your own research, business decisions, or educational purposes—as long as you provide proper reference to RankmyAI as the source (see our Copyright page).
