Mapping the Dutch AI Landscape: Key insights from our latest report

Written by Jesse Weltevreden

The Dutch AI sector is evolving at a remarkable pace, with many new tools and companies emerging every year. But where are these AI innovations taking place, which industries are leading the way, and which companies are gaining the most traction?

To answer these questions, RankmyAI has published the first comprehensive, data-driven analysis of the Dutch AI ecosystem. This report offers a deep dive into the state of AI in the Netherlands, covering over 1,200 AI tools and companies headquartered in the country.

One of the most striking insights is how AI activity is distributed geographically. The distribution of AI tools and companies in the Netherlands is highly concentrated in major urban centers, particularly Amsterdam, which alone hosts more than 38% of all AI businesses. Other cities with notable AI clusters include Rotterdam, Utrecht, Eindhoven, Groningen, Delft, and The Hague. At the provincial level, North Holland and South Holland together account for over 65% of AI activity, with significant concentrations also found in North Brabant and Utrecht. In contrast, provinces such as Zeeland and Drenthe have notably fewer AI businesses. This geographical concentration reflects the tendency of AI companies to cluster near major knowledge institutions, technology hubs, and urban centers.

Beyond location, the report explores how AI tools are categorized across industries. Consultancy & Tool Development is the largest domain, highlighting the many Dutch companies that develop AI-driven solutions or provide AI expertise to other businesses. But the findings also reveal strong activity in Healthcare & Life Sciences, Productivity & Collaboration, and Data Science & Analytics, showcasing the diverse applications of AI across sectors.
At the core of the report is the ranking of the top 250 Dutch AI tools, selected based on website traffic, user reviews, and investment data. The findings confirm the dominance of a small number of high-performing AI tools, which account for a large share of total web traffic and investment. At the same time, new entrants are growing rapidly, proving that innovation and adoption cycles in AI are moving faster than ever.

However, not all AI domains attract equal attention. The report highlights that while some sectors—such as Media & Content Creation—generate high traffic, others with many companies, like AI Infrastructure or B2B services, show much lower online visibility. This raises important questions about the different ways AI tools gain traction, as some tools are widely used by consumers, while others primarily serve specialized business needs.

The full report provides a structured snapshot of the Dutch AI sector, including specialized rankings of the top tools by traffic, investment, and reviews. It also examines how AI adoption has evolved over time, tracking the foundation dates of AI companies and the shifting dynamics in web traffic growth.
